Afilias has been introducing info-domain names with "Umlaute" like "�", "�" and "�" special for the German market. These special characters are also used in many languages, e.g. scandinavian, turkish etc. and are therefore of interest for a great part of the non-anglo-saxon world. Afilias announced that it will be the first generic top level registry to implement an ICANN-standards compliant internationalized domain name (IDN) solution with the launch of its first IDN product for .INFO. By the end of the fourth quarter of 2003,Afilias has opened registration of info-domains using the German script umlaut characters: ��,� ��,� and ��.�

Afilias has launched further IDN.INFO domains 21 October 2006. The following languages will be supported:

  • Icelandic

    The registry of info-domains has also introduced special characters of the Spanish language:

    With over 100 million Spanish-speaking Internet users today, 13 million of which are in the United States alone, we believe that the introduction of Spanish IDNs represents an important addition for .INFO and for the growing base of Spanish-speaking users on the Internet.

    The introduction of these new domain names, termed Internationalized Domain Names (IDNs), now enables Spanish-speakers to establish Web sites using words commonly used in Spanish such as pel�cula.info, tel�fono-m�vil.info, �dolo.info, Pi�ata.info, and others
